Eco-labels – an environmentally friendly alternative

Ecology and the future of our planet have been very important topics for several years now. To care for the natural environment, many food, clothing, and cosmetics producers opt for sustainable production and labelling their products with eco-friendly labels. How do these differ from conventional stickers, where are they used, and what materials are they made from?

Eco-label – what is it?

Eco-labels are an excellent alternative to traditional labels, being significantly more environmentally friendly. They are made from recycled materials – typically brown kraft paper, but they can also be produced from special types of film, with up to 80% of the materials being recycled. They are usually made as self-adhesive labels on rolls.

Eco-labels decompose much faster than traditional ones, yet they are highly durable and resistant to various external factors. They can serve as a primary source of information about a product and as a decorative addition to packaging and effective brand advertising.

Eco-labels typically include markings such as the daisy, eco leaf, or recycling symbol. Phrases like “eco land,” “energy star,” or “CRL” are often displayed as well. These labels can be applied regardless of the product type, but they are most commonly seen on food packaging—especially organic food, organic cosmetics, toys, or household appliances.

Types of eco labels

We can distinguish several basic types of eco-labels, differing from each other, among other things, in their method of production. We are talking about labels:

  • Think Thin – labels with limited size, thickness, and weight, made from lightweight materials with minimal electricity, oil, or wood consumption, and lower carbon dioxide emissions;
  • Wash–off labels are specifically designed for glass returnable packaging. Thanks to their easy removal from glass, bottles or jars can be reused.
  • Multi-Cycle labels are designed for returnable packaging and can even withstand several washes.;
  • Clean Flake – labels made from a material that separates from PET packaging. Once removed, the clean granulate can be reused to produce new packaging.
  • Rebase – labels made from materials sourced from renewable resources, such as waste paper pulp, recycled film, and even grape seeds;
  • Renew – labels made from FSC-certified wood.

Eco Label – a way to build brand image

In recent years, consumers have viewed manufacturers focusing on eco-friendly solutions more favourably. Customers now appreciate the care for the planet evident in their products and are more inclined to choose environmentally friendly goods.
