What is doming?

The doming technology covers the surfaces of stickers, objects, or films with a transparent layer of two-component polyurethane.

After mixing and drying, the resins used in the production process are selected to create a flexible lens. The resin layer also has protective functions—the logo retains its colour and is resistant to damage. The resin layer contributes to achieving a great depth of image and colour, creating a 3D effect, and the aesthetic quality of the prints.

Machine Production

Polinal uses this technology to produce 3D domed stickers in a machine. We continuously improve this process to ensure high efficiency and consistency in producing such stickers.

It is worth noting that various types of polyurethanes provide different rigidity effects for the domed coating. Our self-adhesive 3D domed stickers are supplied in a flexible option. This makes them easier to apply, as the film’s adhesive bonds better with the substrate.

How are 3D doming stickers made?

Domed and 3D stickers are created through a production process that consists of four stages. It starts with printing, then plotting, and finally, polyurethane resin (epoxy resin) is applied. Applying polyurethane resin over the coloured digital print adds vibrancy and depth and protects the colours from damage, resulting in a final aesthetically pleasing and striking effect.

1. Print on foil

The beginning is always about choosing the right printing technique. This mainly depends on the design. It is the stage most closely related to printing.

At POLINAL, we print only on self-adhesive film and other self-adhesive materials, often using digital printing methods on label production machines.

2. Cutting the print

The printed sheets of foil are then sent to cutting plotters, where the material is cut to give individual stickers a specific shape.

Technology today allows for cutting any shapes on self-adhesive materials without expensive dies.

Next, we remove the excess unnecessary film from the sheet.

3. Epoxy polyurethane coating

The sheets are now placed on the work surface of the resin coating machines for domed stickers. The liquid epoxy material covers the sticker and is dispensed in the right amount, flowing only to its edge.

In this production, the sticker’s shape is achieved through the resin’s surface tension properties, which do not flow beyond the cut shape of the label. This requires a high level of machining precision.

4. Maturation of Resins

The coated sticker sheets are then sent to a room with the appropriate temperature and humidity conditions.

We use polyurethanes that harden over time by themselves.

Some manufacturers use UV radiation hardening technology for this purpose. It is not very cost-effective for mass production.

Increasing the durability of markings

After applying the resin, the sticker’s resistance to external factors increases significantly. The resin protects against the harmful effects of sunlight, water, chemicals, and damage. As a result, the durability of such protected labels in product marking can extend for up to several years. To this day, we still see stickers that we poured resin over years ago in good condition. Their colour has remained the same.
